Putnam County Jail Release Paths
Putnam County Jail is the county’s one mapped local detention facility. A person may leave on cash, property, or commercial bond; after time served or sentence completion; under a dismissal or other court order; for transfer to another county or agency; or for intake into GDC after a state sentence. A hold can also send the person to the jurisdiction that placed it. These paths all end the local jail stay, but they do not have the same legal result.
Bond releases the person while the case continues. A misdemeanor sentence may end at this jail after court and jail-credit calculations. A state-prison sentence usually produces a transfer to GDC, not a release home. Another warrant, federal matter, probation or parole issue, or immigration hold can keep the person in custody elsewhere. The release or transfer field in the sheriff’s booking record is the best local starting point.
Confirm Putnam County Jail Release
No verified public Putnam County, Georgia web roster or recent-release page was found. The sheriff app listing says it includes inmate information, but its public description does not prove a 24-hour list, a 72-hour list, field set, update rate, or retention rule. Treat the app as a current information channel, not final release proof.
- Check the Putnam County GA Sheriff app inmate feature if it is available.
- Call the jail at 706-485-2680 and ask for the correct release-record channel.
- Search Georgia VINE for a custody change tied to the right person and agency.
- Review the Putnam County court docket for bond, dismissal, sentence, or transfer orders.
- Submit the sheriff’s Open Records form for the booking sheet and release fields.
- If the person transferred to GDC, move to the state offender and parole systems.
The Putnam County released inmate guide compares those sources in more depth. Absence from the app or any current-custody view is not proof of freedom.
Putnam Jail Records and Contact
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Jail Division publishes the facility at 111 Ridley Drive, Eatonton, Georgia 31024, with telephone 706-485-2680 and fax 706-485-8002. Sheriff Howard R. Sills operates the jail through the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. The page states that the sheriff is the keeper of the county jail under Georgia law.
For a written release record, use the sheriff’s Open Records Request Log Sheet rather than a general inquiry. Give the person’s full name, birth date if known, approximate booking and release dates, case number if known, and arresting agency. Ask for the booking sheet, release date and time, release reason, holds, and release-to or transfer-to agency when those fields are non-exempt.
Request Putnam Jail Release Records
The form can be emailed to records@putnamcountysheriff.org, faxed to 706-485-4840, or mailed to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Attn: Records, P.O. Box 3637, Eatonton, GA 31024. It allows inspection or copies and offers email, mail, or personal retrieval when available. A precise booking date or case number helps staff locate the right event.
The form states that copies may cost 10 cents per page. Search, retrieval, redaction, and other direct administrative costs may also apply, based on the lowest-paid qualified employee, while the first 15 minutes carry no charge. Under Georgia’s Open Records Act framework, available records are generally produced within a reasonable time not exceeding three business days, or the agency responds with timing and lawful grounds for delay or withholding.
Some fields may be redacted due to juvenile, medical, victim, active-investigation, sealed, restricted, or other protected information. A partial record can still establish the local release date and route.
Inside Putnam Sheriff Headquarters
Putnam County Jail is inside the Sheriff’s headquarters at Ridley Drive rather than in a separate regional jail complex. The sheriff says all people arrested for violations of state law are housed there regardless of which law-enforcement agency made the arrest. People convicted of misdemeanors who receive jail terms also serve those sentences there.
This local structure matters. It makes the jail the main facility for bond-out, pretrial, misdemeanor sentence, and transfer questions arising from Putnam arrests. It does not mean every person who leaves the building has completed a sentence. The GDC location directory also lists Putnam County Jail as a county jail, not as a GDC-operated state prison.
The official GDC location entry visually confirms that classification.

That classification keeps local booking releases separate from later state-prison discharge.
Putnam Jail Capacity and Custody
The sheriff’s jail page reports a maximum capacity of 120 and an average daily inmate population of 105 at the time its text was written. Those numbers describe facility scale. They are not annual release totals and should not be used to estimate how many people leave during a day, week, or year.
The facility holds pretrial detainees as well as people serving misdemeanor incarceration. A current jail population is therefore mixed. Some people can bond out; others await a court act; some serve a term; and some wait for another agency. The legal basis for leaving must be read from the individual booking and case.
Putnam County Bond Releases
The Jail Division page says most prisoners may be released on bond after arrest and names cash, property, and commercial bonds. A cash bond is paid as required. A property bond uses equity approved by the sheriff, and the page states that a $20 state-law preparation fee is collected for each property bond. Commercial bonds use an approved bonding company.
Bond is a release mechanism, not the end of the charge. The court file remains important because it can show later hearings, disposition, probation, warrants, or dismissal. When confirming one bond release, ask the sheriff record for the release time, type, and bond data that may lawfully be produced, then compare it with the court docket.
Note: A posted bond can authorize release, but staff still must process holds and the release event.
After a Putnam Jail Transfer
If the record says transferred to GDC, use the Georgia Department of Corrections offender search. Search by name, state ID, case number, age, or other available facts. Review status, facility, sentence, offense, conviction county, sentence dates, and any later release or discharge date. A Putnam jail transfer date is not the person’s state-prison release date.
If the record names another county, federal agency, or other jurisdiction, contact that receiving source. BOP handles federal sentenced-inmate records. ICE has its own detainee locator within its scope. Georgia VINE may report a custody change, but it may not state every legal consequence of the transfer.
For a person released on parole after state prison, the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles and DCS become relevant. For felony probation in the community, DCS and the court order are the better sources. The sheriff does not set state parole.
Released Versus Still at Putnam
Before release, the jail’s video visitation, inmate mail, and deposit channels can help establish that a person remains in local custody. The sheriff publishes video kiosk visitation and inmate email schedules and says deposits may be made in the Sheriff’s Office lobby or through JailATM. Mail goes to the person in care of Putnam County Jail at the facility address.
After release, those channels stop being the right proof path. Use the booking or release record, the court docket, and VINE if a participating record exists. A person transferred to another facility should be contacted through that facility’s rules. This practical shift prevents a failed jail message or deposit from being mistaken for proof that the person went home.
